About Us

Our clients have been coming to our offices at 7 Abercromby Place for legal advice since 1927. We are located in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. We principally provide legal advice and representation to private clients, small businesses and housing associations. Our clients believe that we are friendly and approachable, but understand we are as firm and unyielding as required when their interests are at stake. The firm is broadly divided into two departments, the Private Client Department and the Litigation Department.

The Partners of Aitken Nairn are proud to offer a full Private Client range of services. Our Private Client department is able to help individuals with all aspects of their personal affairs. This includes:

  • Purchase and sale of property
  • Preparing Wills and Powers of Attorneys
  • Executries

We are founding Members of the Edinburgh Solicitors’ Property Centre (ESPC) which sells over 90% of pre-owned houses in the Edinburgh area. We are a well-established legal firm who has acted for several generations of the same families over the years.

Clients of our Private Client department at Aitken Nairn will always have contact with a Partner. We are proud to say that over the years the trust which we have earned from clients has, in many cases, developed into friendship. We have huge experience in drafting and preparing Wills and have built up a large Wills bank over the decades. We assist clients with sympathetic professionalism in administering their loved ones’ Estates and we can also offer expert advice in respect of drawing up Powers of Attorney and preparing Guardianship Applications.

Our Litigation Department offers a full range of services to individuals, families and businesses. We represent clients in all courts in Scotland including the Sheriff Court and the Court of Session. We also represent clients in the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in London. The prospect of court action is often daunting, stressful and frightening. We will explain the process to you in depth and will always seek practical and cost effective solutions to disputes. Where amicable resolution is not possible, we will pursue or defend your court case with efficiency and tenacity.

The cost to you in pursing or defending a court case or in negotiating settlement of a dispute is a critical feature of any case and can often determine whether or not you are able to take the case forward. We are sensitive to this. We will always discuss fees and costs with you at a very early stage – usually on the telephone or at our first meeting – so that you know exactly where you stand. We do not operate a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Instead we offer a range of fee structures, the choice of which depends on a number of factors including eligibility, the complexity of the work involved, and the prospects of recovering costs from the other side and strength of your case. Legal aid may be available.
